The Philadelphia Singers is committed to building partnerships with educational institutions and peer arts organizations. Engaging students in the choral art provides a unique artistic experience that builds musicianship and artistry, and encourages social interaction that deepens students’ connections with the music and their community. Through our concerts and education programs, The Philadelphia Singers develops the choral audience and encourages future performers.
The Philadelphia Singers strives to nurture the choral art through a series of meaningful and challenging education and community activities for middle, high school and college students in the greater Philadelphia region.
The Philadelphia Singers launched the Mentor Program in 2003. The Mentor program provides talented high school students with the opportunity to experience the entire creative process from an audition to rehearsals to performances alongside a professional member of The Philadelphia Singers Chorale.
The Philadelphia Singers’ mentor program is an intensive program that is offered for eleventh and twelfth grade students who are currently involved in their school’s music program or who have demonstrated a significant interest in or talent for music. The program is small, but it is the program’s intimate nature which allows the students to receive an exceptional hands-on and in-depth experience. While it is necessary for participants to have musical knowledge, talent and interest, it is not required or expected that they be “music prodigies”, potential students at a music conservatory or even considering music as their future profession. The program’s emphasis is on creating a valuable and intrinsic artistic experience that supports the growth of the students into productive, creative adults. In the 2010-2011 Season, a minimum of eight students will be selected to participate in the program. Two students will join The Philadelphia Singers Chorale for each engagement with The Philadelphia Orchestra. These engagements include Mozart’s Requiem and Debussy Nocturnes, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex also part of the Kimmel Center’s Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts and Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust.
Auditions for the Mentor program will be held October 26 from 5:30 pm to 8:30pm at the Curtis Institute of Music. Please call 215-751-9494 for more information and to schedule an audition.

The Philadelphia Singers frequently presents Choral Conducting Master Classes for conducting students at area colleges and universities. These master classes have focused on choral repertoire including Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Symphony No. 9, Mozart’s Solemn Vespers and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass. The master class provides conducting students with the opportunity to discuss, analyze, and practice their choral conducting technique under the guidance of David Hayes. The session will introduce participants to the differences as well as the similarities between conducting a chorus and an orchestra and how to listen to as well as rehearse a professional chorus. If you are interested in scheduling a choral conducting master class at your college or university, please call 215-751-9494.
The Student Access Ticketing Program enables students in the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, to experience live classical music performances. Many of the students who participate have never before attended a live classical music performance. To inquire about tickets, call 215-751-9494.
