The Philadelphia Singers
Education Initiatives and Community Relationships

The Philadelphia Singers is dedicated to expanding its education initiatives and community relationships and to the development of new and underserved audiences.

The mission of The Philadelphia Singers is to present choral music of the highest caliber, offer challenging performance opportunities to professional singers, and to promote a knowledge and appreciation of the choral art to people of all ages.

As part of its core mission "to promote a knowledge and appreciation of the choral art to people of all ages," The Philadelphia Singers organization is committed to nurturing the choral art through a series of meaningful and challenging education and community activities for middle and high school students and young adults in the greater Philadelphia region, many of whom have experienced drastic cutbacks in their music education programs.

Programs

The Philadelphia Singers Education Initiatives include the following programs:

  • In School Workshop and Choral Clinic
  • Student Access Ticketing Program
  • Mentor Program
  • National Choral/Orchestral Conducting Workshop
  • Pre-Concert Conversations
  • Artist in Residence

The Philadelphia Singers education initiatives include the multi-disciplinary In School Workshop and Choral Clinic for middle and high school students, which successfully augments the limited resources available for music education in the Philadelphia School District. In October 2005, The Singers will present an In School Workshop and Choral Clinic in conjunction with its performance of Dominick Argento’s Walden Pond. Students will have the opportunity to link, compare, and contrast the work with Thoreau’s original poetry. The workshops are each an hour long and give students an overview of the main musical themes and ideas, background on the composer, and allow students to hear additional samples of the composers solo and choral vocal repertoire. These workshops often include guest lecturers and artists and will be expanded over the next three years in order to reach more underserved students in the Philadelphia area.

The expanded Student Access Ticketing Program enables students who participate in the In-School Workshops, as well as middle and high school students from the 5-county region, to experience live classical music performances in world-class venues. Many of the students who participate have never before attended a live classical music performance. To date, approximately three hundred students have attended these performances each season, free of charge. Tickets will now be offered to three of the four subscription concerts each season.

Our innovative Mentor Program enables eleventh and twelfth graders to experience the rehearsal and performance process alongside professional singers and soloists in The Philadelphia Singers Chorale -- The Philadelphia Singers' symphonic ensemble and The Resident Chorus of The Philadelphia Orchestra. The program, now in its third year, was inaugurated with The Philadelphia Singers’ performances of Hector Berlioz’s monumental and dramatic Requiem in the 2003-2004 Season.

The selected participants gain first-hand knowledge of what it takes to be a singer in a major symphonic chorus. The students join The Philadelphia Singers Chorale for performances with The Philadelphia Orchestra and are paired with a professional member of the Chorale who mentors them throughout the entire process and offers them invaluable insight regarding the experiences and challenges of life as a professional singer.

This season, the Mentor Program has been expanded to include two of our productions with The Philadelphia Orchestra. The students selected will join The Philadelphia Singers Chorale for Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in March or Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (Symphony of a Thousand) in May.

The Singers will hold auditions for the Mentor program on Saturday, January 19 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at The Curtis Institute of Music. Students must audition in order to be considered for participation in the Mentor Program. Students must be able to attend all rehearsals and performances in order to participate in the program. Prior to the start of the scheduled rehearsals each student will receive music, a study tape, and two private coachings. The students will also be provided with an official Philadelphia Singers choir folder.

The Philadelphia Singers’ education programs for students and young adults has also incorporated a collaboration with Chorus America, the national service organization for the choral arts, presenting an intensive four-day
National Choral/Orchestral Conducting Workshop in Philadelphia entitled “Challenges for Chorus and Orchestra in Beethoven.” The workshop took place from May 10-13, 2006 and provided approximately eighteen conducting students with the opportunity to receive expert instruction from leaders in the conducting field, including Christoph Eschenbach, Music Director of The Philadelphia Orchestra and David Hayes, Music Director of The Philadelphia Singers. The active participants received a significant amount of podium time and worked with members of The Philadelphia Singers and the Mannes Orchestra on challenging repertoire, including Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis.

    Performance Enrichment

The Singers also regularly present Pre-Concert Conversations surrounding subscription performances, most recently on May 8, 2005 with Babylon composer Thomas Whitman, librettist Nathalie Anderson and Middle East scholars Udi Bar David and Majid Alsayegh of Intercultural Journeys. This particular discussion explored the timeless and universal themes of the Old Testament, revealing the ancient meditation of Babylon Psalm 137, offering profound healing and redemption for a troubled land that resonates powerfully in today’s complex world.

    Community Relationships

The Philadelphia Singers continue to serve as Artist in Residence at colleges and universities throughout the mid-Atlantic region, including Saint Joseph’s University and Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania. From July 7-10, 2005, an octet from The Philadelphia Singers was in residence at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut for the Hotchkiss Summer Portals Vocal Program.
